Artscape Etched Glass Sticker

For the past four springs, I've had an idiot robin come and fight with its reflect in one of my upstair windows.  The rap-rap-rap gets really annoying to listen to all day.

I found hanging an old curtain I didn't care about outside the window kept the stupid robin away.  However, the curtain wasn't very attractive on the outside of the house, even if you couldn't see it very well from the road due to the cedar trees.

Curtain hanging outside the window.

While I was wandering around Home Depot one day, I spotted Artscape window stickers.  The price wasn't too bad and I thought the sticker would be a good way to cover up the idiot robin's reflection.  It took a bit to find a style I liked, but I finally settled on the Etched Lace.

The process is really very simple.  You unroll the material, measure your window.  Cut the sticker with a box cutter to your window size.

Weighing down the sticker.

CLEAN the window surface.  Then spray the window with a mixture of water and a little bit of dish soap.  Be careful not to get the sticker backing wet while you do this and it may be best to put a towel on the window sill.  You'll need more water in a minute.

Carefully remove the backing from the sticker and press the sticker onto the window.  I started in the center and worked my way out.  Due to the water on the window already, you can fairly easily reposition the sticker as needed.  I left more room than what was called for in the instructions from the sticker to the edge of the window.  Part of this is because I'd actually have to waste more sticker to get it to cover my whole window and I have a downstairs bathroom window I wanted to use the remaining portion of the sticker on.  All told, I should be able to cover two bottom portions of windows with the 24" x 36" roll.  The other part, I kind of like the thin strip of clear glass around the sticker and I think it was a tad easier to reposition with more clearance.

Spray more water and soap mixture onto the sticker on the window.  Then using the squeegie that's provided in the package, start in the center of the sticker and work your way outwards, removing all air bubbles.

And voila, below is the finished result!  All told, this maybe took a half an hour and that was with me forgetting some tools downstairs that I need to fetch.

I did find it was easier to see the air bubbles when the sun was out than when it went behind the clouds, so it may benefit you to do this on a sunny day.

Yes, I only put the sticker on half the window.  The screen should keep the robin away from the other half of the window.

So far it is working, but the real test may not be until Spring 2017.
