Circles: written Jan 2010
When I was younger, I thought of the passing years as circular - the same things happening, just with a different nineteen- ninety number ending. School was school and home life was home life. Now, especially since I moved back down to Rutland County, other than the climate changes also know as the four seasons, life seems to be very different from year to year.
I moved to Proctor from Montpelier to work for a custom design custom build firm and the, a year later my sister Lori and I bought a house together and I was working for the State as a Construction inspector. A year later I was in a different position, this time as a Soils Tech, running gradations on different materials and doing density tests on compacted soils. A year after that, Lori and I are buying tickets for Ireland with our friend and I have two Siberian Husky puppies and yet another new position, this time (and still currently) a Regional Construction Technician. A year after that I fell into the trap that WORK IS ALL and ALL IS WORK. (Still climbing my way out of that well with the rain falling from above.)
It is a new year and I’m assuming that many are figuring for an enlightened period given certain social and political factors. I keep thinking of Rome, such a mighty empire and after them, the Dark Ages. Maybe life really is circular. Maybe Robert Jordan is right and the “ages come and the ages go.” Maybe history is really the future and tomorrow is really yesterday minus a century or two.
But no need to be maudlin - we have so much to look forward to that our ancestors never dreamed of: the poles switching, the sun exploding, an asteroid hitting the earth, global warming/freezing (if they ever decide which), a super volcano erupting, vampires, zombies, aliens, super viruses - who needs to worry about the past coming into today or the future turning into yesterday?
